Total Cost to Import a Car from USA to Belgium: 2026 Worked Examples
Most Belgium import guides stop at duty and VAT. This one does not. The BIV registration tax is the component most articles omit, and it is also the one that most surprises buyers once the vehicle arrives. This article shows three complete cost breakdowns -- line by line, including BIV -- for three vehicles that represent the most common buyer profiles for car shipping from the US to Belgium.
For freight costs and the general duty and VAT breakdown, the full Belgium shipping cost breakdown covers those components in detail. This article builds on that foundation and adds the BIV to produce the complete landed cost picture. How to Read These Worked Examples
Before the numbers: a few points on methodology that make the comparisons meaningful.
CIF-based duty calculation: EU import duty (6.5% for passenger vehicles from the US) is calculated on the CIF value -- the vehicle's purchase price plus ocean freight cost. Not on the purchase price alone. This is how Belgian customs calculates it, and it is reflected in all three examples below.
VAT base includes duty: Belgian VAT is applied to the CIF value plus import duty. This stacking effect is small in percentage terms but material in absolute figures for higher-value vehicles.
BIV figures are regional: Belgium's BIV registration tax is administered separately by Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels. Each example shows the BIV estimate for Flanders as the primary reference point, with a note on the range across regions.
EU import duty note: Section 232 is a US measure and does not apply to vehicles being imported into Belgium. The EU Common External Tariff rate of 6.5% applies to US-origin passenger vehicles regardless of vehicle age.
All figures are illustrative. Exchange rate, duty rates, VAT rates, BIV formulas, and destination charges are all subject to change. These examples are intended to show the relative cost structure and methodology -- not to provide binding quotes. Obtain a current freight quote from WCS and verify all tax and registration figures with a licensed Belgian customs broker before making any purchase decision.
Ocean freight rate used: New York (NJ warehouse) to Antwerp at $1,100 / 17 to 20 days. All USD/EUR conversions at approximately 1.09 USD to EUR for illustrative purposes.
Example 1: Ford Mustang 1969 Fastback -- Maximising Belgian Tax Benefits
Vehicle profile: A documented 1969 Mustang fastback with 302ci V8 in good original condition, sourced at a US auction. At 57 years old, this vehicle qualifies for both oldtimer BIV treatment and the 6% reduced VAT rate.
This is the vehicle profile that makes car shipping from the US to Belgium most financially compelling. Both tax advantages apply simultaneously.
Line-by-Line Cost Breakdown
| Component | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price (USA) | Market example | $55,000 / approx. EUR 50,460 |
| Ocean freight (NJ to Antwerp) | WCS current rate | $1,100 / approx. EUR 1,010 |
| CIF value (duty base) | Purchase + freight | approx. EUR 51,470 |
| EU import duty (6.5% of CIF) | 6.5% x EUR 51,470 | approx. EUR 3,346 |
| VAT base (CIF + duty) | EUR 51,470 + EUR 3,346 | approx. EUR 54,816 |
| Belgian VAT at 6% (historic vehicle) | 6% x EUR 54,816 | approx. EUR 3,289 |
| BIV (Flanders, oldtimer formula) | Regional estimate | approx. EUR 900 to EUR 1,500 |
| Port destination charges (Antwerp) | Destination agent | approx. EUR 800 |
| Total landed cost (Flanders) | approx. EUR 59,845 to EUR 60,445 |
Destination charges are invoiced separately by the destination agent and are subject to change. BIV is an illustrative regional estimate, verify with VLABEL before purchase.
What This Tells You
The combined effect of 6% VAT (saving approximately EUR 8,200 versus 21% VAT on the same vehicle) and oldtimer BIV (saving approximately EUR 3,000 to EUR 6,000 versus the standard modern formula) makes the total tax burden on this vehicle significantly lower than on a modern vehicle of comparable value.
A EUR 50,000 1969 Mustang lands and registers in Flanders for approximately EUR 60,000. That is a premium of roughly 20% over the US purchase price -- a figure that many Belgian buyers and dealers consider workable, particularly when comparable vehicles in the Belgian market command higher prices due to scarcity.
Example 2: Chevrolet C10 Pickup 1972, Classic Work Vehicle With Different BIV Treatment
Vehicle profile: A 1972 Chevrolet C10 shortbed in restored condition with 350ci V8, sourced from a US private seller. At 54 years old, this vehicle also qualifies for oldtimer BIV and 6% VAT.
The C10 is a different buyer profile from the Mustang. It attracts collectors interested in the work truck aesthetic rather than muscle car performance, and it has a growing dedicated following in the Belgian and broader European market. The BIV for the C10 falls in a similar range to the Mustang due to comparable engine specifications under the oldtimer formula.
Line-by-Line Cost Breakdown
| Component | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price (USA) | Market example | $35,000 / approx. EUR 32,110 |
| Ocean freight (NJ to Antwerp) | WCS current rate | $1,100 / approx. EUR 1,010 |
| CIF value (duty base) | Purchase + freight | approx. EUR 33,120 |
| EU import duty (6.5% of CIF) | 6.5% x EUR 33,120 | approx. EUR 2,153 |
| VAT base (CIF + duty) | EUR 33,120 + EUR 2,153 | approx. EUR 35,273 |
| Belgian VAT at 6% (historic vehicle) | 6% x EUR 35,273 | approx. EUR 2,116 |
| BIV (Flanders, oldtimer formula) | Regional estimate | approx. EUR 700 to EUR 1,200 |
| Port destination charges (Antwerp) | Destination agent | approx. EUR 800 |
| Total landed cost (Flanders) | approx. EUR 38,879 to EUR 39,379 |
All figures illustrative. BIV estimate: verify with VLABEL. Destination charges subject to change.
What This Tells You
The C10 at $35,000 lands in Flanders for approximately EUR 39,000 a premium of roughly 21% over the US purchase price, nearly identical in percentage terms to the Mustang example. The lower absolute numbers reflect the lower purchase price rather than any structural difference in the tax treatment.
Belgian and Dutch market values for clean, restored C10s are generally strong. A vehicle landed at EUR 39,000 in Flanders has a reasonable path to retail at a margin if condition and documentation are solid. This is part of what makes the classic American truck segment viable as an import category.
Example 3: Ford F-150 2018 -- Why Modern Pickups Are Problematic in Belgium
Vehicle profile: A 2018 Ford F-150 with 5.0L V8 in good condition, sourced in the US. This vehicle is 8 years old, does not qualify for oldtimer status, and faces both standard 21% VAT and the modern high-emission BIV formula.
This example is included not because it represents a good import opportunity -- it often does not -- but because it illustrates exactly what changes when you move from a classic vehicle to a modern one. The cost structure shifts dramatically.
Line-by-Line Cost Breakdown
| Component | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price (USA) | Market example | $32,000 / approx. EUR 29,360 |
| Ocean freight (NJ to Antwerp) | WCS current rate | $1,100 / approx. EUR 1,010 |
| CIF value (duty base) | Purchase + freight | approx. EUR 30,370 |
| EU import duty (6.5% of CIF) | 6.5% x EUR 30,370 | approx. EUR 1,974 |
| VAT base (CIF + duty) | EUR 30,370 + EUR 1,974 | approx. EUR 32,344 |
| Belgian VAT at 21% (standard rate) | 21% x EUR 32,344 | approx. EUR 6,792 |
| BIV (Flanders, high-emission formula) | Regional estimate | approx. EUR 4,500 to EUR 7,000 |
| Port destination charges (Antwerp) | Destination agent | approx. EUR 800 |
| Total landed cost (Flanders) | approx. EUR 44,066 to EUR 46,566 |
All figures illustrative. BIV estimate for high-emission petrol V8: verify with VLABEL. In Brussels, BIV would be substantially higher. Destination charges subject to change.
What This Tells You
An F-150 purchased for $32,000 in the US -- less than either of the classics above -- ends up costing more to land and register in Flanders than the $35,000 C10. The 21% VAT alone (EUR 6,792) is more than three times the 6% VAT on the C10 (EUR 2,116). The BIV adds EUR 4,500 to EUR 7,000 that the classics largely avoid.
The total cost as a percentage of US purchase price is also significantly higher: roughly 50 to 60% above the US purchase price for the F-150 versus roughly 20% for the classics. And in Brussels, with its more aggressive BIV formula, the F-150 total could exceed EUR 50,000.
This does not mean modern American trucks cannot be imported to Belgium. It means the financial case is much harder to make, and the buyer or dealer absorbing that cost needs a clear justification. For most buyers, the classics make more sense.
The Comparison in One Table
| Vehicle | US Price | Landed Cost (Flanders) | Tax Premium Over US Price | VAT Rate | BIV Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1969 Mustang fastback | $55,000 | approx. EUR 60,000 | approx. 20% | 6% | EUR 900 to EUR 1,500 |
| 1972 C10 pickup | $35,000 | approx. EUR 39,000 | approx. 21% | 6% | EUR 700 to EUR 1,200 |
| 2018 F-150 | $32,000 | approx. EUR 45,000 | approx. 50 to 60% | 21% | EUR 4,500 to EUR 7,000 |
The F-150's lower US purchase price produces the highest tax burden as a percentage of vehicle value. The older vehicles' combined tax advantages -- reduced BIV and 6% VAT -- keep their total landed cost in a range that the Belgian market can absorb.
All figures are illustrative estimates. Exchange rates, duty rates, VAT rates, BIV formulas, and destination charges are all subject to change. Verify all figures with a licensed Belgian customs broker before making any purchase decision.
Why West Coast Shipping for Car Shipping from the US to Belgium
Getting the freight side right is what WCS manages. That means US export documentation, container loading at the NJ warehouse, ocean freight coordination to Antwerp, and connection with the destination agent for port clearance.
West Coast Shipping has been handling European car shipments for over 17 years. Every Belgium-bound vehicle is assigned a dedicated account manager who knows what documentation needs to accompany the shipment and can advise on what to prepare before the container departs. Container shipping is the standard method for all vehicles -- classic muscle cars, vintage pickups, and modern trucks alike -- providing enclosed, protected transit for the ocean crossing.
The Belgium car shipping service covers current routes, rates, and the standard service structure. For the broader BIV context including how the three regional formulas work for modern and classic vehicles, the complete BIV and import cost guide covers all three vehicle categories.
