Car Auctions in the USA: How Overseas Buyers Bid and Ship | 2026
A US auction can sell you a car in minutes, but that car cannot go on a ship until the title is in hand and US Customs has seen both at least 72 hours before sailing. For a buyer overseas, the auction you pick decides your paperwork more than your price, and that is where we would start.
By the Numbers
- $1,100 and 17-20 days: a car in a container from New Jersey to Rotterdam (WCS rates table, October 24 2026).
- $1,200 and 14-16 days: New Jersey to Southampton.
- $2,100 and 23-27 days: California to Auckland.
- 72 hours: how long before export the vehicle and its title must be presented to US Customs when it leaves by sea or air (CBP, 19 CFR Part 192).
Four Kinds of US Car Auctions, and Which Ones Work From Abroad
Collector Auctions: The Front Door for Overseas Buyers
Mecum, Barrett-Jackson, RM Sotheby's, Broad Arrow, Bonhams and Gooding run live sales, and Bring a Trailer and Cars & Bids run online ones. They register bidders from other countries and handle the title transfer themselves. For a collector car, this is the route we would take: the title comes through the auction house, so the 72-hour clock can start soon after the hammer. Our list of the top collector car auctions in the USA covers the calendar.
Dealer Auctions: Through a Licensed Dealer Only
Manheim and ADESA sell to licensed dealers. A buyer abroad gets in only through a licensed US dealer who bids, pays and takes the title for them. It works for volume buyers who already have that relationship. For one car, the dealer's fee usually eats the saving.
Salvage Auctions: Cheap Cars, Careful Titles
Copart and IAA sell insurance losses to registered buyers in the US and abroad. The title type matters more here than anywhere else, because some destination countries refuse salvage or rebuilt titles. Our salvage auction guide for international buyers covers it in detail.
Government and Public Auctions: Short Pickup Windows
Fleet, police and seized vehicles sell through government and public auctions open to anyone who registers. The cars are mostly late-model daily drivers, rarely collector material, and pickup windows are short. Line up the truck before you bid, not after.
The Title Decides When Your Car Can Sail
US Customs wants the original Certificate of Title, or a certified copy, plus two complete copies, and the vehicle itself, at least 72 hours before a car leaves by vessel or aircraft. If there is a lien, it also wants a letter from the lienholder. The export filing in AES is required for every used vehicle, whatever its price, and also 72 hours ahead (15 CFR 30.2 and 30.4).
So a car whose title is mailed two weeks after the sale cannot leave for two weeks, whatever the ship schedule says. Ask the auction house how and when it releases the title before you register.
Budget the Landed Cost, Not the Hammer Price
Every auction adds a buyer's premium on top of the hammer, and the rate differs by house and by sale, so read the conditions of sale for each one. Then add the US pickup, the ocean or air leg, and duty and tax at home. Our shipping calculator prices the ocean leg to your port. A few lanes from our rates table on October 24 2026:
| From | To | Car in a container | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Jersey | Rotterdam | $1,100 | 17-20 days |
| New Jersey | Bremerhaven | $1,100 | 30-33 days |
| New Jersey | Southampton | $1,200 | 14-16 days |
| California | Yokohama | $3,200 | 24 days |
| California | Sydney (asbestos testing included) | $2,250 | 30-33 days |
| New Jersey | Jebel Ali | $1,350 | 65-70 days |
The coast matters. A car sold in Arizona or California for a buyer in Germany costs $1,850 and 40-45 days to Bremerhaven from California, against $1,100 and 30-33 days from New Jersey. A truck across the country can pay for itself.
Bidding From Abroad: What We Would Do
- Register early. Collector houses check bidders before the sale, so do it well ahead, not the night before.
- Get eyes on the car. Ask the auction for extra photos, or send a local inspector. Online comment threads help, but a person under the car helps more.
- Set your maximum with everything in it. Hammer, buyer's premium, pickup, ocean or air, duty and tax.
- Sign the paperwork before the sale. A power of attorney for export lets us act on the car the day it is yours.
- Book the pickup. Storage at the auction grounds starts charging fast.
After the Hammer
Pay the auction on its own terms and send us the bill of sale and title details. We run our own warehouses in California, Florida and New Jersey, covering all of the US for imports and exports, and our own team loads every car and handles every document. We ship door to door by ocean or air. Our collector car shipping process shows each step.
