Monterey Car Week Is Misunderstood: 241 Lots Sold Below Estimate
At Monterey Car Week 2026, held 13–16 August in Monterey, California, 241 of 467 verifiable lots sold below their low pre-sale estimate across Gooding Christie’s, Broad Arrow, Bonhams and Mecum. 148 of them cost under $150,000.

The week everyone reads about
Monterey Car Week 2026 produced the largest week of collector car sales in history. A Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe at $42.9 million. A McLaren F1 GTR at $34.7 million. A Corvette Grand Sport at $18.7 million. More than a dozen world records for modern supercars, several of them broken and rebroken inside seventy-two hours. Total sales of $755.6 million, at an average of $885,765 a car.
Every one of those numbers is real. They are also the reason Monterey is misunderstood.
Read the coverage and you come away with a clear impression: this is a week where other people buy cars. Somewhere in California, once a year, a small number of very rich buyers hand each other eight-figure cheques under a tent. Nothing about that has anything to do with you.
That impression is wrong, and the auction results say so plainly.
The week that actually happened
An average is a poor description of Monterey. A handful of irreplaceable cars carry so much of the total that the mean stops describing anything a normal buyer would encounter. Strip out the top and the week looks completely different. 310 lots sold for $100,000 or less, a figure Hagerty put at the top of its own round-up of what its staff would have taken home.
So we went further and asked a harder question: not what things cost, but whether they were cheap. The only honest way to answer that is to compare each result against the estimate the auction house itself published before the sale, which is the specialists’ own view of what the car was worth.
We took every lot at every Monterey house that still leaves its pre-sale estimate recoverable after the hammer falls, matched each price against its estimate, and counted. 241 of the 467 lots we could verify sold below the low end of their own estimate. Together they cost $61.7 million against $75.8 million of low estimates, a gap of $14.1 million. The median car among them went 19% under. Ninety-seven went 25% or more under. Forty-three went 40% or more under.
Two hundred and twenty-nine of the 241 are cars; the remaining twelve are motorcycles and racing equipment that crossed the same blocks.
How this was checked
Most auction houses remove the estimate from a lot page the moment the car sells, which is why this comparison is rarely made. Four of the five Monterey houses leave it recoverable. One does not.

Lots checked means sold lots where both the result and the pre-sale estimate could be established at the source. RM Sotheby’s sold 185 cars at Monterey; none of them can be checked this way.
How each number was established. Gooding Christie’s keeps the estimate on its public lot page. Broad Arrow removes it from its main site but keeps it on its bidding platform. Bonhams removes it from the visible page but leaves it in the page’s own data. Mecum publishes its catalogue through a search index that retains the estimate alongside the result.
For the first three, every price was matched against the gross price in an independent results sheet covering all 591 lots at those houses, and a car was kept only where the two agreed. That check discarded lots that could not be reconciled, and it is the reason these figures can be relied on. Mecum does not appear in that sheet, so its rows are single-sourced to Mecum’s own catalogue data, where the estimate and the result sit in the same record.
Every price here includes the buyer’s premium. Every estimate excludes it. So each discount below is understated — the real gap at the hammer is wider in every single case.
Two markets under one tent
None of this means the top of the market was soft. It was the opposite, and the contrast is the whole story.
RM Sotheby’s catalogued fourteen headline Ferraris at Monterey and published an estimate for each. Eleven sold. Six beat the high end of their estimate, five landed inside the range, and not one sold below it. The other three did not sell at all. The 288 GTO carried a $9–11 million estimate and made $11.56 million. The F40 carried $4–5 million and made $8.37 million. The 812 Competizione A carried $2.5–2.9 million and made $4.85 million.
Hagerty found the same split from the other direction. Measured against its Price Guide condition-appropriate values, cars from the 1950s and 1960s were the only two decades to finish below the guide, at a median of 6.2% under. Cars from the 1980s onward finished 31 to 38% above it.
A market that pays 67% over the high estimate for one car and 40% under the low estimate for another is not one market having a good week. It is two markets standing in the same tent, and only one of them is in the headlines.
The difference is what the car is for. At the top, low-production modern Ferraris are traded as positions: owning one improves your standing when the factory allocates the next. That is a closed game with a small number of players and it sets the records. Below it, a car is a car, and it is worth what someone in the room will pay for it that afternoon. That is an open game, and it is where the discounts live.
Where the deals were
The 241 are not spread evenly. They cluster in the eras that need an owner rather than an investor.

The 1950s and 1960s account for 114 of the 241 on their own, which is also where the most cars were offered. Prewar and interwar coachbuilt cars are heavily represented relative to how few of them crossed the block: 43 cars built before 1940 went under estimate, including French and British bodies that would have been the stars of a sale twenty years ago. American customs and restomods make up much of the mid-century cluster.
What is thin is the modern end. Fifty-three cars from 1980 onward went under estimate, and most of those are ordinary rather than exotic. The supercars that made the records are not on this list, and that is exactly the point.
What a hundred grand bought
This is the part that gets lost. 148 of the 241 cost less than $150,000, the median among them was $63,560, and 54 changed hands for under $50,000. Not project cars and not oddities alone: E-Types, 356s, XK120s, a 3.0 CSL, a Lotus Eleven Le Mans, a Meyers Manx. Cars people actually want, bought in the same tents and on the same afternoons as the eight-figure Ferraris, for less than the specialists expected.

A 1932 MG J2 Roadster at Mecum, which sold for $16,500 against a $75,000–$85,000 estimate, 78% below the low end. The deepest six-figure result was a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K Roadster, also at Mecum, at $1,265,000 against a $2,500,000–$3,000,000 estimate.
Why is RM Sotheby’s not in this analysis?
RM Sotheby’s removes the pre-sale estimate from its lot data once a lot sells, so its 185 sold Monterey cars cannot be checked this way. Its absence is a limit of the available data, not a comment on its sale.
Do auction estimates include the buyer’s premium?
No. Pre-sale estimates are quoted on the hammer price and exclude the buyer’s premium, while the reported sale prices in this analysis include it. Every discount stated here is therefore understated: the gap at the hammer is wider in every case.
Can an overseas buyer bid at Monterey?
Yes. All five houses accept registered international bidders, in the room, by telephone and online. The practical work is what happens after the hammer: export documentation, transport to a port and a container or shared load to the destination country. That is arranged separately from the auction.

What this does not say
RM Sotheby’s is absent because it cannot be checked, not because its sale was different. Its 185 sold cars almost certainly contain their own share of results below estimate. Nothing here should be read as a comment on that house.
Mecum publishes an estimate on part of its catalogue rather than all of it: 159 of the 338 lots it sold, generally the higher-profile ones. Its share of lots below estimate describes that subset.
And an estimate is a forecast written months before a sale, by specialists who are usually right. A car finishing below one is not a verdict on the car or on the house that catalogued it. Gooding Christie’s posted the week’s best sell-through at 94% while appearing on this list 65 times. Both of those things describe the same healthy sale.
The argument here is narrower than it might look. Monterey is not cheap. It is simply not only expensive, and the difference matters if you have been assuming the week has nothing in it for you.
The car is still in California
A car bought 40% under estimate in Monterey is a bargain the moment the hammer falls and a logistics problem the morning after. Most of the buyers who could have taken these cars home never bid, either because they assumed the week was out of reach or because they were four thousand miles away and the shipping looked harder than it is.
