A 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 sold for $791,000 on Bring a Trailer on September 24, 2026, while a 1968 AMC Javelin SST sold for $18,000 a month earlier. Same decade, same idea of a big V8 in a light American body, and a price gap of 44 times. Our view: American muscle cars are no longer one market, and the buyer who knows which half they are shopping in gets far more car for the money.

American Muscle Cars by the Numbers

CLASSIC.com market benchmarks, October 2026, for the ten classic muscle cars collectors ask us about most, overseas buyers included.

Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 1967-1969 About $103,000
Pontiac GTO 1964-1967 $63,253 average sale
Dodge Challenger 1970-1974 $58,644 (standard)
Pontiac Firebird 1970-1981 $49,223 average sale

Plymouth Barracuda 1964-1966 $23,767 average sale
Ford Mustang hardtop 1965-1966 $22,895
AMC Javelin 1968-1970 $21,946 (base)

What the same cars cost delivered abroad, from our rates table on October 21, 2026:

  • $1,200 and 14-16 days: a car in a shared container from New Jersey to Southampton.
  • $1,100 and 30-33 days: New Jersey to Bremerhaven.
  • $1,350 and 65-70 days: New Jersey to Jebel Ali.
  • $2,250 and 33-36 days: California to Melbourne, asbestos testing included.
  • $62,836: a standard 1970-74 Challenger landed in the UK, with 5% import VAT for an original car over 30 years old (HMRC).
  • $63,926: the same car landed in Germany, with 7% import VAT on a collector's vehicle (UStG).

The Two Muscle Car Markets in 2026

The top of the market is priced like art. CLASSIC.com benchmarks a Cobra 289 at $991,897, the first Cobra, CSX2000, sold for $13.75 million at RM Sotheby's Monterey in August 2016, and a 1971 Hemi 'Cuda convertible hammered at $3.5 million at Mecum Seattle in June 2014. Those prices follow chassis numbers and paperwork, not horsepower.

Below $60,000 sits the market we think most collectors should be shopping: a standard Challenger, a Cougar, an early Barracuda, a Mustang hardtop and a Javelin. Most of the driving fun of a 1970 R/T for half the money or less.

Shelby Cobra 289: $991,897

A small-block Ford V8 in a light British chassis from AC Cars, built 1962 to 1965. At this money the build sheet and the history file are the car. Our take: buy the documents first and the paint second.

Dodge Charger 1968-70: $79,147 to $106,444

CLASSIC.com puts a standard 1968-70 Charger at $79,147 and an R/T at $106,444. The second-generation body is the one the world recognizes. We think the standard car with a big-block swap history is the honest buy, and the R/T premium only pays when the fender tag proves it.

Dodge Challenger 1970-74: From $58,644

A standard Challenger benchmarks at $58,644, an R/T from 1970-71 at $107,352 and a 1970 T/A at $111,071. That $48,708 jump from standard to R/T is the widest on this list. Our view: the standard car is where the value is.

Pontiac GTO 1964-67: $63,253 Average

The GTO started as an option package on the 1964 Pontiac Tempest. Its $63,253 average sale on CLASSIC.com makes it cheaper than a Charger R/T. We would take a 1966-67 hardtop over any clone of something rarer.

Chevrolet Camaro 1967-69: About $51,000 to $103,000

A standard first-generation Camaro now benchmarks near $51,000, an SS near $69,000 and a Z/28 near $103,000. The Camaro has left the budget tier for good. Pay for an SS with its numbers intact, or look at the Firebird below.

AMC Javelin 1968-70: $21,946

The base Javelin benchmarks at $21,946 and an SST at $43,978, and a 1968 SST sold for $18,000 through Hagerty on August 19, 2026. It is the cheapest way into a 1960s V8 pony car on this list. Our view: the most underpriced car here, because parts, not performance, keep buyers away.

Ford Mustang 1965-68: $22,895 to $81,981

A 1965-66 hardtop benchmarks at $22,895, a 1965 GT fastback at $66,807 and a 1968 GT fastback at $81,981. The roofline is most of that gap. Mustangs are everywhere, so overseas buyers should skip the common hardtop and spend freight on a fastback or a GT.

Mercury Cougar 1967-70: $32,659

Mercury's car on the Mustang platform: $32,659 base, $43,563 for an XR-7 and $76,616 for an Eliminator. We think the XR-7 is the pick, a Mustang underneath for far less than a Mustang GT fastback.

Plymouth Barracuda: $23,767 to $278,307

First-generation Barracudas, 1964 to 1966, average $23,767. A 1970-71 Hemi 'Cuda coupe benchmarks at $278,307. The early car is the value pick, and it carries the name.

Pontiac Firebird 1970-81: $49,223 Average

The second-generation Firebird averages $49,223, and a 1973-74 Super Duty 455 Trans Am benchmarks at $104,790. Our take: the Super Duty is the last car of the original formula, and it costs less than a Charger R/T.

Shipping an American Muscle Car Overseas

We ship from our own warehouses in California, Florida and New Jersey, covering all of the US for imports and exports. Our own team loads every car and handles every document, and we ship door to door, by ocean or by air. In the UK an original car over 30 years old pays 5% import VAT and no duty. In Germany a collector's vehicle over 30 years old pays 7% import VAT. The EU's 0% duty on US-built cars from July 1, 2026 (Regulation (EU) 2026/1455) is granted by the customs office handling the import and depends on proof of origin, which a 50-year-old car rarely has, so we price classics on the 30-year collector's rule. See what passed on EU 0% duty and our Germany and UK pages.
