Classic American 4x4s to Import to the UK at 5% VAT | 2026 Guide
A stock 1987 K5 Blazer Silverado at $46,997 in the US lands in Southampton for about GBP 38,600 all in, because a 30-year-old vehicle in original state enters the UK at 0% duty and an effective 5% VAT. The same truck with a modern LS swap and lifted suspension pays 10% duty and 20% VAT, about GBP 9,800 more. The UK's collectors' vehicle rule rewards the untouched truck, and that shapes the whole shortlist below.
Our view is simple. The best American 4x4s to import to the UK right now are the ones built before 1986: they clear customs as collectors' pieces, pay no vehicle tax from April 2026, and skip the MOT if unmodified. Here are the seven we would look at, with what they cost on both sides of the Atlantic. The woodgrain Grand Wagoneer has its own guide, linked below.
By the numbers
- Ocean freight, New Jersey to Southampton: $1,200 per vehicle in a consolidated container, 14-16 days (WCS rates table, October 18, 2026).
- UK import tax on an original 30-year-old vehicle under heading 9705: 0% duty, 5% effective VAT. Standard rate: 10% duty, 20% VAT (UK Integrated Online Tariff, read October 19, 2026).
- Vehicles built before 1 January 1986: no vehicle tax from 1 April 2026, and no MOT if there are no substantial changes (GOV.UK, historic vehicles).
- First-generation Ford Bronco in the US: 184 for sale, asking $49,999 to 265,675, average about $147,000 and restomod heavy (CLASSIC.com, October 2026). UK asking: GBP 21,940 to 70,799 (Classic Trader).
- Chevrolet K5 Blazer in the US: asking $17,900 to 128,995, average about $54,000 (CLASSIC.com). UK asking: GBP 21,468 to 51,584; a 1989 K5 Silverado in Greater Manchester at GBP 24,000 (Car and Classic, October 2026).
The rule that decides what to buy
HMRC classifies a vehicle under heading 9705 when it is at least 30 years old or no longer in production, in its original state, scarce, not normally used for its original purpose, outside the normal trade and worth more than a normal used vehicle. The duty is then 0% and import VAT is charged on a quarter of the value, so 20% becomes an effective 5%. HMRC decides case by case and tells buyers to ask its Tariff Classification Service before purchase. We would.

"Original state" is the trap for American 4x4s, because the US market loves a restomod. A first-generation Bronco with a Coyote V8, coilovers and a modern interior is a wonderful truck and, in customs terms, a modified used vehicle. Buy it if you want it; just price in the standard 10% and 20%. On a $147,000 Bronco that is about GBP 30,000 more than the same truck in stock form.
The shortlist
Ford Bronco, 1966 to 1977
The original. A 92 inch wheelbase, a 170 straight six or a 289 and later 302 V8, and a body that Ford copied again in 2021. Every one qualifies on age, and every one built before 1986 is tax and MOT exempt in the UK. Stock survivors are now the hard part; CLASSIC.com's $147,000 average is pulled up by six-figure restomods, and an honest original 302 truck sits well under that. UK dealers ask GBP 21,940 to 70,799.
Chevrolet K5 Blazer, 1973 to 1991
Our pick for value. The 1973 to 1991 square-body K5 is a full-size two-door 4x4 with a removable top on the early trucks and the 350 V8 in most of them. The 1973 to 1985 trucks are 40-year classics; the 1986 to 1991 Silverado trim is 30-plus and the nicest to live with. US asking prices average about $54,000 with clean stock trucks in the mid 40s; the UK has a handful at GBP 21,468 to 51,584.
Chevrolet C10 and K10, 1973 to 1987
The square-body pickup, two-wheel drive as the C10 and four-wheel drive as the K10. A 1973 to 1985 K10 Silverado with a 350 is the most usable classic truck on this list, with parts supply that never ended. Buy a 1985 or earlier for the tax exemption, and buy a short bed.
Ford F-100 and F-150, 1973 to 1979
The sixth-generation F-Series, the one with the dentside body. Ford built millions, so clean 4x4 Rangers and Explorers still exist at sensible prices in Texas and Arizona. The 1979 trucks are the last of the shape and the most wanted. All of them are tax exempt in the UK.

International Scout II, 1971 to 1980
The farmer's Bronco, built in Fort Wayne until International left the light truck business in 1980. The Scout II with the 345 V8 and the Traveler long-roof are the ones collectors want. Values are thinner than the Bronco's: a 1979 Traveler sold for $38,950 on Bring a Trailer in 2022, and good trucks trade in that band. Rust is the enemy; buy from the Southwest.
Dodge Power Wagon
Two trucks share the name. The 1946 to 1968 flat-fender Power Wagon is a military truck with a title, and the 1977 to 1980 Macho Power Wagon is the square-body Dodge with the stripes. Both are over 40 years old and both are rare in the UK. Values depend heavily on condition, so get a specialist inspection before bidding.
Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser, US-spec
Not American, but sold in America from 1960 to 1983 and now one of the most traded classic 4x4s there: CLASSIC.com's benchmark is $35,920, with stock trucks from the mid 30s to about $60,000. A US-spec FJ40 with the 2F six is left-hand drive, like everything else on this list, and clears UK customs the same way.
What a classic 4x4 costs landed in Southampton
At about 1.33 dollars to the pound, October 2026, rounded. Ocean freight from our New Jersey warehouse is $1,200, about GBP 900; the Southampton destination charge is GBP 620. A stock 1987 K5 Blazer Silverado at $46,997, about GBP 35,300, pays no duty and about GBP 1,800 of import VAT under heading 9705. Landed: about GBP 38,600, plus a GBP 55 DVLA fee. A $39,000 Scout II Traveler, about GBP 29,300, lands for about GBP 32,300 on the same basis.
The restomod Bronco shows the other side. At $147,000, about GBP 110,500, a stock example under 9705 lands for about GBP 117,600. Reclassified as a modified vehicle it pays about GBP 11,100 of duty and GBP 24,500 of VAT, landing at about GBP 147,700.
Registering it in the UK
Nothing on this list needs an IVA test; vehicles over 10 years old are exempt from approval. The steps are the import declaration at Southampton, duty and VAT, a NOVA notification to HMRC within 14 days, an MOT where the vehicle is under 40 years old or modified, and a V55/5 to DVLA with the original US title and GBP 55. Left-hand drive registers as it is. Fit left-dipping headlamps and a rear fog lamp; the speedometer already reads in mph. For a vehicle built before 1986, apply for the historic vehicle tax class once the V5C arrives.
Buying in the US and shipping it home
Bring a Trailer, Cars and Bids and Mecum's January sale in Kissimmee are where these trucks trade in volume; specialist dealers in Texas, Arizona and California hold the dry stock. Insist on underbody photos and the build date on the door plate.
From the sale we pick the truck up anywhere in the US and bring it to our own warehouse in California, Florida or New Jersey, where our own team loads every vehicle and handles every document. New Jersey to Southampton runs 14-16 days, Florida 32-39 and California 29-40, consolidated with other cars or in a dedicated container. Air freight is quoted case by case. We ship door to door, and the import agent at Southampton clears the vehicle and files the NOVA notification.
Frequently asked questions
Which classic American 4x4s qualify for 5% import VAT in the UK?
Any vehicle at least 30 years old, in original state, that HMRC accepts as a collectors' piece under heading 9705. Stock first-generation Broncos, K5 Blazers, square-body Chevrolet and Ford pickups, Scout IIs, Power Wagons and FJ40s can all qualify. Restomods do not.
Does a restomod pay more import tax in the UK?
Yes. A vehicle with a modern engine, suspension or interior is not in original state, so it pays the standard 10% duty and 20% VAT instead of 0% and 5%.
Which imports are exempt from UK vehicle tax and MOT?
Vehicles built before 1 January 1986 pay no vehicle tax from 1 April 2026, and vehicles over 40 years old with no substantial changes are MOT exempt. Owners must apply for the historic tax class.
Do classic 4x4s need an IVA test?
No. Vehicles first registered or manufactured more than 10 years ago do not need vehicle approval in the UK.
How much is shipping from the US to the UK?
Ocean freight from New Jersey to Southampton is $1,200 per vehicle in a consolidated container, 14-16 days, plus a GBP 620 destination charge. Florida is $1,375 and California $1,850.
