Car Shipping To Denmark

Denmark is one of the countries in Europe known for its love of vintage, antique and classic cars. Each year, a few hundred vehicles leave the shores of the United States in containers and arrive at the ports of Aarhus, Copenhagen, and Fredericia. While many are modern cars belonging to the Danish moving back home, the majority are classic cars imported from the USA. But that wasn't always the case.

From 2009 to 2012, the Danish customs administration tried to limit the number of classic car imports by charging a higher VAT. If you wanted to import a classic car to Europe during that time, the cheapest option was the Netherlands. They had a "vintage rule" in place and charged just a 5% VAT on classic car imports. During that time it made little sense to ship classic cars to Denmark. People were able to ship classic cars to the Netherlands and transport them to Denmark for less.

Denmark finally implemented the vintage car import rule in 2013 and matched the low 5% import rate on classic, antique, and vintage vehicles. Since then, the Danish have been importing more classic cars from the USA than ever before. During the last quarter, there was a 30% increase in the number of cars shipped from the USA to Denmark.

Since Sweden's VAT on classic cars is 12%, the people of Sweden also take advantage of the low VAT import by first importing the classic car into Denmark. We have agents near the border of Sweden who can help with unloading and clearing the vehicles with customs. You pay the low 5% VAT in Denmark, collect your vehicle in Denmark, and drive back to Sweden.

Denmark Car Import Tax

Denmark has 4 different tax brackets it uses to calculate import duties on your vehicle.

VAT/DUTY on vehicles over 30 years old - Classic, Vintage, and Antique Cars

Vehicles must be in original condition without any major alterations on the engine and chassis.

  • Duty is 0%

  • VAT is 5% (calculated on the value + freight)

VAT/DUTY on vehicles under 30 years old

  • Duty on cars is 10% (calculated on the value + freight)

  • Duty on motorcycles is 6% (calculated on the value + freight)

  • VAT is 25% on all vehicles (calculated on the value + freight + duty amount)

VAT/DUTY on all vehicles sent to DK when people move to/move back to DK

People moving to Denmark can avoid paying any VAT or duty charges upon importing their cars. It is also typical for Danes to move back after living abroad to avoid the VAT and duties. Here are the rules:

  • If the customer has lived in the States for more than 12 months and owned his/her vehicle for more than 6 months, it can be cleared with Danish customs without any VAT or Duty

  • Customs will require to see the US work permit, or documentation proving the stay was more than 12 months

  • Additionally, they require a copy of the Bill of Sale which was created at least 6 months ago

  • The deadline for receiving personal effects VAT/duty-free AFTER moving to Denmark is 12 months from the date you are registered with an address in Denmark

If you have any questions regarding the required proof please contact the Danish Customs and Tax Administration directly.

Shipping Options

By using a container for shipping, we can load anywhere from 1 to 6 cars (depending on size), the vehicles can either run and drive or be project cars. We offer consolidation when shipping to the port, saving you money by shipping your vehicles along with other cars in the same container. When shipping high-value vehicles, we can load them in their own dedicated 20ft or 40ft containers.

Shipping via Roll-on/Roll-off is another option when shipping cars overseas. However, unlike containerized car shipping, you cannot ship anything inside of your vehicle, and the car is in run-and-drive condition to be able to drive on and off the ship. The ports which support RoRo vary widely, and so do the rates.

If you require your vehicle overseas as quickly as possible, we recommend shipping the car via Air-Freight service. Compared to lengthy shipping times and possible port delays when shipping in a container or via RoRo, shipping your car by Air is the quickest shipping option. Transit time is estimated at around 3 to 10 days, depending on the documentation and customs requirements.

Motorcycle Shipping to Denmark
How Motorcycles Are Shipped Overseas

Motorcycles are a popular import from the US, and most customers use a container. You can fit up to 8 motorcycles in a 20ft container and up to 16 in a 40ft container. They are securely strapped and braced. This makes it the perfect solution for wholesale buyers and dealers. Use the shipping calculator on this page to get a quote, or contact us.

Another option is shipping your motorcycle via air freight to any international airport. It's a more expensive option, and it requires a custom crate to be built around the bike. However, air freight will minimize transit time.
