NEW ZEALAND MOTORCYCLE SHIPPING PORTS

Ports & Shipping Routes: USA to New Zealand

We ship motorcycles from the USA to the primary New Zealand motorcycle shipping port, Auckland.

Auckland is New Zealand's largest and busiest commercial port, and the country's main entry point for international vehicle imports. Located on the North Island's Waitematā Harbour, it serves as the primary gateway for motorcycle shipments from the USA to New Zealand, with frequent container sailings and excellent handling for sport bikes, classic motorcycles, dirt bikes, and high-value custom builds. WCS coordinates secure loading, US export documentation, and delivery directly through this major Pacific shipping hub. Auckland offers the fastest processing times, easy access to MPI biosecurity inspection facilities and entry certification compliance centres, making it the most efficient arrival point for US motorcycle imports.

Auckland's central North Island location makes it a convenient arrival point for motorcycle shipments heading to destinations across New Zealand. From Auckland, onward delivery can be arranged to Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, and anywhere else across both the North and South Islands.

Depending on your final delivery location, our local agents can coordinate onward transport from the Port of Auckland to your destination anywhere in New Zealand. If you need assistance with port pickup, NZ Customs clearance, MPI biosecurity inspection, or local delivery coordination, our team can manage the full motorcycle import process for a smooth arrival in New Zealand.

Documents Required to Ship a Motorcycle to New Zealand from the USA

Shipping your motorcycle from the United States to New Zealand involves clearing US customs, which requires submitting several documents to prove bike ownership. Here are the required documents for motorcycle export to New Zealand:

  • Bill of Sale for the motorcycle
  • Original Motorcycle Title (If there is a lien on the bike, a lien release letter is also required)
  • Power of Attorney form
  • Completed Online Shipping Form
  • Copy of Passport (if you are an international citizen without a US passport)
  • Copy of EIN Letter (if you are a US citizen)

Please note that certain states do not issue titles for classic motorcycles. For example, Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont do not issue titles for older bikes. Ensure you check the requirements specific to your state before proceeding with your motorcycle export to New Zealand.

Once your motorcycle arrives at the Port of Auckland, additional import documentation may be required for NZ Customs Service clearance, including a commercial invoice, certificate of origin, and Bill of Lading. You will also need a Vehicle Import Approval (VIA) from NZTA (Waka Kotahi — New Zealand Transport Agency) confirming your motorcycle meets New Zealand safety and environmental standards. Your motorcycle must pass an MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) biosecurity inspection before it can be released from the port. Depending on your motorcycle, compliance certificates or a Statement of Compliance (SOC) from an MIA-authorized manufacturer's representative may also be needed for entry certification and registration. Your account manager can advise on the full documentation needed for a smooth New Zealand import process.

The Motorcycle Import Process to New Zealand

GST & Import Taxes on Motorcycles Imported to New Zealand

  • New Zealand does not charge customs duty on imported motorcycles. This makes New Zealand one of the most cost-effective destinations for motorcycle imports from the USA. The only tax applied is GST (Goods and Services Tax), calculated on the CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) value of your motorcycle.
  • GST on imported motorcycles entering New Zealand is generally applicable based on the motorcycle's declared value, insurance costs, and freight charges combined. Consult a qualified customs broker or the NZ Customs Service (Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa) directly for current GST calculations specific to your shipment.
  • GST exemption may be available if you are a first-time immigrant or a returning New Zealand citizen or resident. General conditions may include having lived outside New Zealand for at least 21 months, having owned and used the motorcycle for at least 12 months, agreeing not to sell the bike for at least two years after import, being physically present in New Zealand when applying for the exemption, and the motorcycle must not be under finance. Your account manager can help determine your eligibility and assist with the application to NZ Customs.
  • All motorcycles arriving in New Zealand must pass an MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) biosecurity inspection before being released from the port. MPI inspectors check all internal and external surfaces for dirt, soil, plant material, seeds, insects, and any organic residue — including the wheels, engine bay, undercarriage, and interior. To avoid quarantine cleaning fees, we recommend thoroughly cleaning your motorcycle before shipping. If a motorcycle fails its initial MPI inspection, decontamination and re-inspection fees will apply.
  • NZTA (Waka Kotahi — New Zealand Transport Agency) compliance requirements apply to all motorcycles that will be used on New Zealand roads. Your motorcycle must obtain a Vehicle Import Approval (VIA) and successfully complete entry certification, which verifies it meets New Zealand's safety and emissions standards. A Warrant of Fitness (WoF) inspection is also required before registration.
  • Classic and vintage motorcycles may have relaxed compliance requirements. Pre-1990 vehicles are generally subject to fewer standards, though they must still pass MPI biosecurity inspection and obtain a WoF. This makes New Zealand an attractive destination for shipping classic and vintage motorcycles from the USA.

Please complete the rate request form at the top of this page to get in contact with our team. We can help estimate the GST and fees applicable to your specific bike and destination, and check your eligibility for a GST exemption.
